Rougarou Road Trip Stop #1: Honey Island Swamp Survival Kit

Pawpaw said “Don’t go to Honey Island Swamp after dark.”

I took the grandchildren anyway — 4pm, top down on Pawpaw's blue convertible, purely educational, of course.

The Rougarou is Louisiana's own werewolf legend, said to hunt bad kids and anybody who forgot their bug spray.

Around here, the real danger isn't the legend — it's the mosquitoes and running out of water. I'm Tina, a Certified Aromatherapist since 2013, and I live 15 minutes from Honey Island Swamp in Pearl River, Louisiana.

The Convertible That Started It

Pawpaw's philosophy: "If you're gonna chase legends, do it in style." So we did — top down, Spanish moss overhead, grandchildren in the back seat questioning whether the Rougarou is even real.

My answer: "Only if you forget the Repel 100."

NanaTee's Rougarou Stop #1 Survival Kit

1. Repel 100 Insect Repellent (DEET 98.11%) Swamp mosquitoes bite through jeans. Rougarou don't. Pick your battle. Spray your shoes, hat, and the back of your neck — mosquitoes target ankles. My rule: one for you, one for Pawpaw. He forgets.  Shop this item

2. Sawyer Mini Water Filter Honey Island doesn't have stores nearby, and this filters swamp water in a pinch. Same equipment does double duty for hurricane prep. Pawpaw's own words: "Rougarou don't carry bottled water." My rule: keep it in the glovebox year-round. Louisiana Nana rule. Shop this item

3. Olight Baton 3 Pro Flashlight (1800 lumens, rechargeable) Bright enough to blind a gator — Pawpaw tested it. Your phone flashlight dies right when you need it most; this doesn't. My rule: one for you, one for the 8-year-old. They drop everything. Shop this item

4. Thermacell MR450 Mosquito Repeller Clears a 15-foot radius around your camp without spraying anything on skin — the parent-friendly alternative when you don't want DEET all over the kids. My rule: start it 10 minutes before you even stop the car. It creates the bubble. Shop this item

5. Adventure Medical Kit .5 Waterproof, FSA-eligible, small enough for the glovebox. Cypress knees cause cuts, and grandchildren fall — every time. I add Benadryl cream to mine for swamp-plant itching. My rule: check it before hurricane season. Band-aids disappear. Shop this item

Why Trust My Swamp List?

I've seen gators, hogs, and one Pawpaw who got lost for 3 hours because "he knew a shortcut." This kit got us home safe — Rougarou-free, mosquito-bite-free, and meltdown-free.

How to Use This Kit — NanaTee's Rougarou Road Trip Rules

4:00 PM — Leave Pearl River. Top down. Start the Thermacell.

4:30 PM — Arrive at Honey Island. Repel 100 on everyone, no exceptions.

5:00 PM — Walk the trail. Olight in your pocket, Sawyer in your bag.

6:00 PM — Return before dark. Pawpaw's rule.

6:30 PM — Gumbo at the house. Legend debrief. [Get the Gumbo Recipe HERE]

P.S. — Pin this kit for hurricane season too. The same gear (filter, flashlight, medical kit) covers you during power outages, not just swamp trips.

Important Safety Note

Honey Island Swamp is home to real alligators.

Stay on marked trails...

don't feed the wildlife...

and don't go chasing legends after dark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Honey Island Swamp safe to visit with kids?
Yes, with the right precautions — stay on marked trails, keep everyone sprayed with repellent, don't feed any wildlife, and plan your visit to end well before dark. The real risks are mosquitoes, heat, and uneven ground, not the swamp legend.

Do you need a guide, or can you visit on your own?
This particular stop is a self-guided trail visit, not a boat tour — you can drive in, park, and walk the trail yourself with the right gear. If you want to get out on the water itself, a guided swamp boat tour is a separate, worthwhile add-on.

Why does Pawpaw insist on leaving before dark?
Visibility drops fast once the sun sets, trails get harder to see, and wildlife activity picks up at dusk.

It's simply safer to be back at the car with full daylight left, legend aside.

Is DEET repellent like Repel 100 safe to use around children?
Repel 100 and similar DEET-based repellents are generally considered safe for children when used as directed on the label — avoid hands, eyes, and any broken skin, and always follow the product's age guidance.

If you'd rather avoid direct DEET application on kids, that's exactly why the Thermacell earns its spot in the kit — it clears a zone around you without anything going on skin.

What if I can't get every item in the kit before my trip?

If you can only grab one or two things,

prioritize the insect repellent and a way to see in the dark (a real flashlight, not just your phone) —

those cover the two most common problems on any Louisiana swamp trip, kit or no kit.
