Blueberry Dump Cake | 4 Ingredients + No Mixing Bowl | Church Cookbook Easy

Spoonful of warm blueberry dump cake with bubbling blueberry filling and golden buttery cake mix topping in turquoise bowl, 4-ingredient no mixing bowl dessert from NanaTee's Cajun Home

Baby, my Mama showed up to every funeral, potluck and baby shower with a 9x13 Pyrex and a smirk. “What you bring?” “Dump cake.” “You didn’t even mix it?” “That’s why it’s called DUMP, sha.”

This Blueberry Dump Cake is 4 ingredients. No bowl. No mixer. No measuring spoons if you’re brave. You dump blueberry pie filling, sprinkle cake mix, slice butter, bake. The oven does the work while Nana puts her feet up.

Pawpaw calls it “lazy cobbler.” Grandkids call it “the best cake ever.”

Serve it hot with Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla melting down the sides. Nobody will know you didn’t stir a thing.

Let’s dump.

Why Mama’s Dump Cake is Nana’s Emergency Dessert

`1. 4 ingredients: Pie filling + cake mix + butter + pecans. If Nana can count it on one hand, she’s making it after church.*

`2. No mixing bowl: Dump straight in the pan. Nana’s dishwasher thanks you.

`3. 5-minute prep: Faster than driving to Walmart for Entenmann’s. And cheaper.

`4. Serves 12: Church ladies, grands, unexpected company. Or Pawpaw + Nana for 3 nights straight.

`5. Frozen berries work: No pie filling? Use 6 cups frozen blueberries + 3/4 cup sugar. Nana’s got options.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cans blueberry pie filling – 21 oz each.
  • 1 box yellow cake mix – 15.25 oz.
  • 3/4 cup butter – 1 1/2 sticks, sliced thin. Real butter, not margarine
  • 1/2 cup pecans, chopped – Louisiana pecans.

Optional Nana Upgrades: 1 tsp cinnamon + 1 tsp vanilla extract stirred into pie filling

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1: Prep Pan + Oven
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease 9x13 baking dish. Or don’t. Nana’s never had one stick. But grease it if your pan is old.

Step 2: DUMP #1 – Fruit
Open 2 cans blueberry pie filling. Dump in pan. Spread even. If using Nana’s upgrade, stir cinnamon + vanilla right in the pan. No bowl needed.

Step 3: DUMP #2 – Cake Mix
Open box yellow cake mix. Dump dry mix evenly over berries. DO NOT STIR. Just sprinkle it like you’re feeding chickens.

Step 4: DUMP #3 – Butter
Slice 3/4 cup cold butter thin. Lay slices all over dry cake mix. Cover as much as you can. Gaps = dry flour spots. Mama overlapped it like roof shingles.

Step 5: DUMP #4 – Pecans
Sprinkle 1/2 cup chopped pecans over butter. This is the Louisiana twist. Skip it and Mama will know.

Step 6: Bake
Bake 45-50 min till top is golden brown and fruit is bubbling up the sides like a crawfish boil. If top browns too fast, tent foil last 10 min.

Step 7: Cool 15 Min Then Scoop
Let sit 15 min so it sets up. Scoop with big spoon. It ain’t pretty slices – it’s dump cake. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Nana’s Dump Cake Rules + Fixes

Dry flour spots on top

You didn’t cover cake mix with butter. Next time, grate frozen butter over top. Or drizzle 1/4 cup melted butter on dry spots halfway through baking.

Too soupy

You used cherry pie filling + forgot it’s juicier. Add 1 Tbsp cornstarch to fruit next time. For now, call it “Spoon Cake.”

No pie filling

Use 6 cups frozen blueberries + 3/4 cup sugar + 3 Tbsp cornstarch + 1 tsp lemon juice. Toss in pan first. Still counts as dump cake.

Burnt pecans

You added them before baking. Add last 15 min instead.

Too sweet

Use 1 can pie filling + 3 cups fresh/frozen berries. Or serve with no ice cream – but why would you?

How to Make This Nana-Proof for Later

`Fridge: Cover pan with foil. 4 days. Reheat 350°F for 15 min or microwave 30 sec per scoop.*_

`Freezer: Nana don’t freeze baked dump cake – topping gets soggy. But you can freeze UNBAKED: Dump fruit + dry mix in freezer-safe 9x13. Wrap tight. Freeze 3 months. Thaw overnight. Top with fresh butter slices + pecans. Bake. Tastes like you made it today.

`Crockpot Version: Same dumps. Cook LOW 3-4 hours. Top gets soft not crispy, but Nana’s done it during hurricane power blips.

When Nana Dumps This Cake

*Funeral:* Bring warm in pan + gallon Blue Bell. Southern condolence law.

*Unexpected Company:* 5 min prep. 45 min bake = “Nana just threw this together.” They’ll never know.

Tuesday Night: Because Pawpaw said “you ain’t baked nothing sweet lately.” Fixed.

`From Nana’s Kitchen: Mama passed in 2022. But her dump cake lives in every church cookbook from Ponchatoula to Baton Rouge. She taught Nana: “Feed people. Don’t impress them.” This cake feeds 12 people with 5 minutes work. That’s Louisiana Nana math.
