Louisiana Pecan Pralines: Nana's Kitchen Tips for Sweet Southern Perfection
If you grew up in Louisiana like me, you know a good pecan praline is more than candy.
It’s a memory.
It’s Sunday after church, it’s Mama in the kitchen, it’s "Made with love, just like Mama used to!"
These Louisiana Pecan Pralines are creamy, nutty, and melt-in-your-mouth good. They’re the perfect little bite of Southern Sweet to take to a church social, give as a gift, or just keep on the counter for "taste testing" 😉
Nana's Microwave Pecan Pralines Recipe
Makes about 12-15 pralines
You’ll need:
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup heavy cream
2 tbsp butter
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp baking soda
Pinch of salt
1 1/2 cups pecan halves
How to make it:
Mix: In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine brown sugar, white sugar, and heavy cream. Stir well.
Cook: Microwave on HIGH for 3 minutes. Stir. Microwave 2 more minutes.
Add: Stir in butter, vanilla, baking soda, and salt. It will foam up — that’s good!
Pecans: Stir in pecans. Microwave 1-2 more minutes till it’s bubbling and thick.
Drop: Working fast, drop spoonfuls onto wax paper or a silicone mat.
Set: Let them cool 20-30 minutes till they firm up.

Why Microwave Works for Pralines
Traditional pralines need you to hit "soft ball stage" at 236°F. The microwave does the heating for you. The baking soda makes them creamy instead of grainy, just like stirring forever on the stove.
In South Louisiana, pecans are everywhere. We put them in everything from pies to candy. Pralines are our state candy for a reason — they’re sweet, buttery, and taste like a hug.
Nana's Kitchen Tips for Perfect Pralines
1. Use a Big bowl!
It foams up a lot when you add the baking soda. Use at least a 4-cup bowl!
2. Work fast when dropping.
If it gets too stiff, just microwave it for 10 seconds to soften it back up.
3. Humidity matters.
Y’all know Louisiana weather! On rainy or humid days, let them set longer or add 1 extra minute of cooking time so they don’t stay sticky.

Storage Tip:
Keep them in an airtight container with wax paper between layers.
They’ll last about a week... if they make it that long!
Final Thoughts
There’s nothing quite like homemade pralines to taste like home. Sweet, buttery, and full of pecans. This is the recipe I make when I want something "Sweet Southern Perfection!" that reminds me of Mama.
