Baby, let Nana tell you about the day I learned Butter-Flavored Crisco was a gift from the Lord.
It was July 1998. U-Pick blueberry farms around Covington had berries for 99¢ a pound. Pawpaw came home with 20lbs. I had 7 grands under 10 years old saying “Nana we’re hungry” every 20 minutes.
I needed a cookie that stayed soft for days, used 2 cups of berries, and made ENOUGH. This church cookbook recipe said “makes 7 dozen.” Nana said “Hallelujah.”
These ain’t crispy cookies, sha. They’re soft and cake-like. Like a muffin top married a sugar cookie and had a blueberry baby. The Butter Crisco keeps them soft 5 days. The berries burst and make purple pockets. The kids call ‘em “blueberry pillow cookies.”
Make a double batch. Freeze half the dough. Let’s bake.
Why Nana Swears by Butter Crisco for Blueberry Cookies
*1. Soft for 5 days:* All-butter cookies go hard in 24 hours. Crisco = soft like Pawpaw’s heart when the grands hug him.
*2. No spreading:* These stay puffy and cake-like. No flat pancake cookies in Nana’s kitchen.
*3. 7 DOZEN:* 1 batch = 84 cookies. That’s 12 cookies for each of my 7 grands. Nana’s math.
*4. Freezer friendly:* Freeze the dough balls. Bake from frozen. Fresh cookies in 12 min when company drops by.
*5. No mixer needed:* Wooden spoon + big bowl. Grands can help stir without breaking Nana’s KitchenAid.

INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup Butter-Flavored Crisco – must be butter flavor, sha
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 2 large eggs, room temp
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp almond extract – Nana’s secret. Makes berries pop
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 cups fresh blueberries – or frozen, do NOT thaw
- 1 cup white chocolate chips – optional but Pawpaw loves ‘em
- 2 Tbsp flour – for tossing berries
INSTRUCTIONS:
Step 1: Prep + Preheat
Preheat oven to 375°F. Line baking sheets with parchment.
Step 2: Cream Crisco + Sugars
In a LARGE bowl – you’ll need it – beat Crisco, granulated sugar, and brown sugar 2 minutes till fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla + almond extract. Beat till it looks like cake batter.
Step 3: Dry Ingredients
In separate bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, salt. Add to wet mix. Stir till just combined. Don’t overmix or cookies get tough. Nana’s biceps get a workout here.
Step 4: Berry Trick – Most Important Step
In a small bowl, toss 2 cups blueberries with 2 Tbsp flour. This keeps them from sinking and bleeding all over. If using frozen, toss straight from freezer. Do NOT thaw or you’ll have purple dough.
Step 5: Fold Gently
Add floured berries + white chocolate chips to dough. Fold with spatula. Some berries will burst. That’s flavor, not failure. Dough will be thick and sticky.
Step 6: Scoop + Bake
Use 1 Tbsp cookie scoop or 2 spoons. Drop 2 inches apart – they puff, not spread. Bake 9-11 min. Edges set, centers look slightly underdone. THAT’S how you get soft cookies. Let cool 5 min on pan, then move to rack.
Nana’s Rules for Perfect Blueberry Cookies
Purple streaks everywhere
You stirred too hard. Fold once, walk away. Frozen berries bleed less.
Cookies flat as communion wafers
Your Crisco was melted. Use room temp, not liquid. Or you overmixed.
Dry cookies
You baked 13 min. Pull at 9 min. They finish on hot pan. Trust Nana.
Berries sank to bottom
You forgot to toss in flour. Nana forgets too. Eat ‘em anyway.
Only got 4 dozen
Your scoop was too big. 1 Tbsp = 7 dozen. Ice cream scoop = 3 dozen.
How to Freeze Like Nana Planned Ahead
`Freeze Dough: Scoop dough balls onto sheet pan. Freeze 1 hour till solid. Dump in gallon freezer bag. Label “Blueberry Cookies – 375°F 12 min.” Keeps 3 months. Bake from frozen, add 2 min.*_
`Freeze Baked Cookies: Cool completely. Layer between wax paper in container. Freeze 2 months. Thaw 10 min on counter. Taste like day 1.
What Nana Serves With Blueberry Cookies
*After School:* Glass of milk. 7 grands quiet for 4 minutes. Nana record.
Church Potluck: Stack on cake stand. Bring empty container home. Nana famous.
*Baby Shower:* Tie 3 in cellophane bags with ribbon. “Nana’s Blueberry Love” tags.
Pawpaw’s Lunchbox: 4 cookies keep him from buying gas station donuts.
`From Nana’s Kitchen: Butter-Flavored Crisco was invented for recipes like this. Don’t substitute all butter unless you like crispy cookies. Don’t skip the almond extract unless you like boring cookies. And don’t tell Pawpaw how many you ate before the grands got home.
