3 Nap Time Toys That Made My Grandkids Readers | Under $20

Published on July 25, 2026 at 11:34 AM

I’m 15 minutes from the Honey Island Swamp. I don’t do iPads at nap time. I do what my MawMaw said to:

“Clear the crib. Turn on the lamp. Put these 3 things on the rug. Call me in 20.”

What kind of Cajun magic is this?

No magic, sha. Just NanaTee’s Toothbrush Rule:

If it plugs in, it stays in the living room. If it teaches, it comes to the nursery.

1. LEAPFROG 100 WORDS BOOK
Why it’s NanaTee approved: My 2-year-old grandson says “gato” before “cat.” Touch the picture, it says the word in English AND Spanish. Bilingual babies = smart babies.
NanaTee’s Rule: No WiFi needed. Survives sippy cup spills. Pawpaw thinks it’s magic. It’s just good teaching.

2. MAGNETIC CUBIC BLOCKS
Why it’s NanaTee approved: Math for babies. They stack, they count, they build. When it falls, we laugh. When it stays, we cheer. Fine motor skills + problem solving.
NanaTee’s Rule: If they can build a tower taller than Pawpaw’s coffee mug, they get a gold star sticker. Works every time.

3. GOODNIGHT MOON BOARD BOOK
Why it’s NanaTee approved: “Goodnight room. Goodnight moon. Goodnight Nana’s NCIS.” This book puts Pawpaw to sleep before the grandkids. Routine = sleep. Every single time.
NanaTee’s Rule: Same book, same chair, same time. Babies crave boring. Excitement is for the playground.

NANATEE’S NO-SCREENS NAP ROUTINE

1:30pm: Yellow lamp on. iPad off. Crib clear.
1:35pm: Grandkid picks 1 toy from the rug. Not me.
1:40pm: Rocking chair + book OR blocks. No talking from Nana. Let them explore.
1:55pm: “Goodnight Moon” = final warning. Teddy bear gets tucked in first.
2:00pm: Out like a light.

This routine survived 3 grandkids, 2 hurricanes, and 1 Pawpaw who snores through story time.

WHY TRUST MY NURSERY?

I’m not a pediatrician. I’m a Louisiana Nana with a lap, a rocking chair, and 30 years of putting kids to sleep.

Everything here passed the Toothbrush Rule: If it won’t teach them something AND survive a hurricane evacuation, it doesn’t stay in my house.

YOUR TURN

What toy actually made YOUR grandkid smarter? Not just quiet. Smarter. Tell me below so I can add it to my list for new Nanas.

With love, good books and zero screens,
NanaTee

P.S. Pin this routine for later. Your future self at 1:47pm will thank you.

Important Note:

Supervise kids under 3. Books are for educational use, not a substitute for parental supervision.
