Airplane Diaper Cake DIY | Military Baby Shower Gift for Army Dad

Three-tier airplane themed diaper cake with white and blue curly ribbon, light blue satin ribbons, plush blue airplane topper, and Go Planes Go board book, handmade baby shower gift for army air traffic controller dad from NanaTee's Cajun Home

Baby, when Nana heard her nephew was an Army air traffic controller AND having a baby boy, she knew plain diapers in a basket wouldn’t fly.

This Airplane Diaper Cake landed at the baby shower and folks thought Nana hired a party planner. Joke’s on them. It’s 96 diapers, ribbon, a $9 plush plane and Nana's two hands. Takes 45 minutes. Looks like $150 on Etsy.

Diaper cakes are the best baby shower gift, sha. They’re decor for the party AND useful after. New Mama gets 3 days of diapers. New Daddy who guides planes for a living gets a centerpiece that honors his service. Baby boy gets his first airplane before he can crawl.

Nana made an Amazon list with every single item – no hunting Hobby Lobby with 7 grands. Link’s below.

Let’s build this plane.

Why This Airplane Diaper Cake is Nana’s #1 Baby Shower Gift

`1. Useful, not just cute: 96 diapers = 3-4 days for a newborn. That’s 3-4 days New Mama isn’t running to Walmart at 2am.*

`2. Honors Daddy’s service: Air traffic controller for the Army? Nana added blue ribbons  + a plush plane.

`3. No cake skills needed: If you can roll diapers and tie ribbon, you can make this. Nana’s 57 and her hands still work.

`4. Doubles as decor:* Set it on the gift table. Add the Go, Planes, Go!` board book. Instant theme. No balloons needed.

YOU’LL NEED:

  • 96 Size 1 Diapers – Nana uses Huggies. Don’t use newborn – baby outgrows in 2 weeks
  • Large & Small Rubber Bands – or clear hair ties
  • 1 Cardboard Cake Round 10-inch – for base. Nana cut the diaper box showing the size 1 for this.
  • 1 Paper Towel Tube – center support
  • Light Blue Satin Ribbon 1.5-inch – 5 yards.
  • Blue + White Curly Bows – 6 count
  • 1 Plush Airplane Toy – 6-inch.
  • 1 Airplane Board Book  Go, Planes, Go! by Addie Boswell
  • Gel Super Glue – don’t glue diapers, only ribbon

How to Build the Airplane Diaper Cake – Nana’s Flight Plan

Step 1: Roll Diapers – The Fuselage
Roll each diaper tight from open end to closed. Secure with small clear hair tie or rubber band. Roll 96 of them. Put on Pawpaw’s favorite Western movie. Time flies.

Step 2: Build Tier 1 – Base
Stand paper towel tube in center of cake round. Hot glue to base so it don’t tip. Stand 42 rolled diapers around tube. Secure all with 1 large rubber band. This is your biggest tier.

Step 3: Build Tier 2
Make second ring with 32 diapers on top of tier 1. Secure with rubber band. Push gently so it’s centered.

Step 4: Build Tier 3 – Cockpit
Top tier = 22 diapers. Secure with rubber band. You should have a 3-tier “cake” now.

Step 5: Hide Rubber Bands
Wrap light blue satin ribbon around each tier to cover rubber bands. Secure in back with straight pin or double tape.

Step 6: Add “Clouds + Wings”
Add a curly bow to each ribbon to finish off. Focus on front – that’s the “airplane trail.” Looks like it’s flying.

Step 7: Top It + Prop It
Set plush airplane on top tier. Prop Go, Planes, Go! board book against front. Done.

Nana’s Time: 45 minutes. Nana’s Mess: Zero.

Nana’s Tips for Turbulence-Free Gifting

Baby girl shower

Pink ribbon + pink plush plane.

No plush plane

Use wooden airplane toy, or small metal plane ornament. Check Dollar Tree.

Diapers keep unrolling

You rolled loose. Tight roll + clear hair tie. Or use a dab of tape – New Mama won’t care.

Traveling to shower

Build tiers at home. Transport flat in box. Assemble on site. Add ribbon + bows there.

What to Write on the Card – Nana’s Words

"May your little pilot always fly high, land safe, and know his Daddy guides heroes for a living. And may he use these diapers slower than Pawpaw changes the TV channel."
